José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC and Mohamed Morsi, President of Egypt give a press point after there meeting.

Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi has been overthrown by a military coup.Military leaders in Egypt have conferred full powers on Adly Mansour, Egypt’s top judicial authority, in moves it said were aimed at resolving the country’s debilitating political crisis.

In what many have characterized as a ‘democratic coup’, Egypt’s army chief Gen Abdul Fattah al-Sisi said that Egypt’s constitution had been suspended and the chief justice of the constitutional court would take on Mr Morsi’s powers, and then new elections to form a “technocratic government” would take place.

Flanked by religious and opposition leaders, Gen Sisi said Mr Morsi had “failed to meet the demands of the Egyptian people”.
