Hundreds take refuge at UNMISS headquarters
“UNMISS can confirm that hundreds of civilians have been seeking refuge in the UNMISS compound adjacent to the international airport and at UN House in the Jebel Kujur area, a large number being women and children.
The statement issued by UNMISS this afternoon called for calm “while UNMISS is not a humanitarian operator, and our mandate is to protect civilians, basic water supplies and medical treatment are being provided. We hope the security situation in Juba will quickly normalize to enable the civilians to return very soon to their residential areas. To that end, UNMISS calls on all parties to show continued calm and restraint”.

UNMISS denies harboring coup plotters
“UNMISS takes this opportunity to deny any suggestion that the UN Mission is harbouring any key political or military figures”. Reads the statement issued in the aftermath of the coup attempt.
In neighboring Uganda hundreds of travelers are stranded at Ilegu border post. Sources from there report that crossing from both sides of the border is being restricted by security officials.
Tension has been building in South Sudan since President Kiir dismissed his entire cabinet that included his Deputy Riek Machar.
