East African Countries have signed a sign Joint Regional Financing Mechanism for the Standard Gauge Railway

The protocol has been signed at a special meeting attended by Presidents, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, Uhuru Kenyatta, Paul Kagame, Salva Kiir and the Rt. Hon. Prime Minister of the People’s Republic of China paving the way for its implementation.

“I thank His Excellency Uhuru Kenyatta for being a real East African, not in words, but in action. Even the Bible says we shall know them by their fruits” – President Museveni  remarked to  his East African counterparts during the signing ceremony in Kenya.

The first Summit of the Northern Corridor Integration Projects held in Kampala last year decided that Member States develop a Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) as a regional project. The 3rd Summit directed that the SGR protocol be developed. The draft protocol was presented to the 5th Summit this month in Nairobi.

The overall objective of the SGR is to jointly develop and operate a modern, fast, reliable, efficient and high capacity regional railway transport system as a seamless single system and as a mechanism to stimulate overall economic development.

The SGR project starts in Mombasa, the gateway to East and Central Africa through Nairobi, Kampala, Kigali and Juba. The project covers about 3,200 kilometres of railway track.
