Tanzania has emerged as the most attractive investment destination in East Africa and the ninth best in Africa, according to a report published by Rand Merchant Bank’s (RMB) “ Where to Invest in Africa: A guide to corporate Investment”.

Tanzania has taken over the top spot in East Africa from Kenya which was ranked as the 10th best place to Invest in Africa.

Recently, Tanzania National Bureau of Statistics reported that, Tanzania’s economy grew at a much faster pace of 7.5 percent in the first quarter compared to 7.4 percent of the same period last year.

On the other hand, Rwanda was ranked 14th in Africa and its economic climate index. It was cited as a very interesting investment destination in Africa only disadvantaged with its small market size.

Overall, South Africa tops the ranking, followed by Nigeria and Egypt. However “One of the most notable conclusions is that South Africa could possibly be overtaken by Nigeria in the next two to four years, or even sooner depending on Nigeria’s rate of economic growth,” the report noted.

Methodology

RMB uses three main factors to determine the investment attractiveness of each country in its report: market size (GDP); economic growth (GDP growth forecasts over the next five years); and an operating environment index.
