Mogadishu-The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) has today formally welcomed Ethiopian National Defense Forces into the peacekeeping mission.

The AMISOM Force commander Lt. Gen. Silas Ntigurirwa received the forces at a ceremony held in Baidoa, in the Bay region, South Central Somalia.

This is in effect of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2124-pasted last year that provided for increased capacity of the AMISOM force strength from 17, 731 to 22,126 uniformed personnel.

The Ethiopian troops take over the Bay region from the Ugandan and Burundian troops, permitting the latter to deploy further into parts of Lower and Middle Shabelle. A total of 4, 395 Ethiopian troops are to be deployed into AMISOM, forming the force’s 6th contingent.
