The opposition Democratic Alliance in Uganda has announced its withdrawing from having dialogue with the Government of President Yoweri Museveni.
The Inter Party Organization for Dialogue is an inter-party forum for dialogue whose membership is comprised of all registered parties In Uganda. Its aim is to pursue and foster inter-party dialogue, tolerance and co-operation.
Prof. Frederick Sempebwa of The Democratic Alliance-TDA-a loose coalition of political parties announced Thursday morning that they are withdrawing from Inter Party Organization for Dialogue as a protest for Government’s failure to consider their views on electoral reforms.
‘All political parties under the democratic alliance will with immediate effect withdraw from the democratic alliance discussions. We feel that they (government) have absconded from their duty and overthrown the power of the people” Sempebwa told a media briefing at TDA offices in Naguru today.
Way forward
“The TDA preoccupation will now be to accelerate all efforts aimed at causing regime change in order to form a transitional Government that will work towards electoral reforms” said Prof Sepembwa.
Why withdraw?
Prof. Sempebwa explains that they arrived at the decision to withdraw from the inter party political organization dialogue after Government tabled a bill on electoral reforms without considering the views that the inter party consultations had arrived at after spending billions carrying out countrywide consultations.
“Over one billion shillings was spent to facilitate countrywide consultations on electoral reforms and a further five billion shillings from the European Union was spent on consultations among political parties and we now consider this money wasted” Sempebwa says they were surprised that Government did not consider a single proposal from the democratic alliance.
