Kampala-Uganda has announced plans to reduce the number of border entry and exit points.
Uganda currently has more than three hundred exit and entry points along its borderline with Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, DRC and Southern Sudan.
Uganda’s Minister for Internal Affairs  Gen. Aronda Nyakairima says the decision to closedown the entry and exit points is intended to streamline border operations and help in the fight against terrorism.
“We are in the process of agreeing with our neighbors the Kenyans to jointly manage some by jointly deploying security personnel on the ungazzetted points and if we can not then we have to close them down” Nyakairima says Uganda currently has more than 300 entry and exit points that are unmanned.
“The immigration department should closedown all ungazzetted points because it’s illogical to tighten security checks at Entebbe International Airport yet in the countryside criminals and terrorists can cross at will” remarked Nyakairima in an interview with the Continent Observer.
“I therefore instruct all the Resident District Commissioners and the police commanders to block all ‘panya’ (illegal crossing points) in all their respective areas” Aronda says the immigration officials are too few and cannot mannage all the 300 exit and entry points in the country.
In a related development, Nyakairima says foreign investors will nolonger be allowed to bring along with them workers from their country of origin.
“We shouldn’t look like we are going to be anti-alien but we have to agree with you (investor) on how many people you can come along with. We welcome friends but we cannot allow a situation where your workers are 100% foreign” Aronda says some foreign investors even bring workers from their country of origin to manage parking yards in their factories.
The minsiter’s remarks follow concern from members of the public in Uganda who are opposed to the high number of foreigners who are engaged in petty activities.
Foreign investors however say they are forced to bring workers from their home countries because the locals usually cheat them.
