South Sudanese Celebrate Christmas in IDP Camps

Juba-The people of South Sudan have joined the rest of the world to celebrate Christmas Day after a week of violence.

The clergy who presided over the mass from various Catholic parishes called for an end to ethnic killings which has wrecked the world’s youngest nation.

In Unity state, Father Joseph Makuey said the Church was deeply concerned about the crisis that has hit South Sudan since 15 December.

“The message that I would like to convey to the people of Unity state […] should continue pray for peace, truly this moment is a critical moment because we have lost many lives in South Sudan but I firmly believe through our prayers almighty God will change this critical situation”, the priest is quoted by the Sudan Tribune.

The priest urged the leaders of South Sudan to come together as the fighting was result in death and causing inter-communal tensions, not only in Juba where the conflict began, but in Unity and Jonglei, where revenge attacks are believed to have taken place.

The commander of the South Sudanese army in Unity state rebelled over the weekend declaring himself as the new governor, siding with Riek Machar – the former Vice President – who Kiir sacked in July.

In Bantiu state The mass was conducted by the Head Priest of Catholic Parish in Bentiu Father Samuel Akoch.

Meanwhile the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for South Sudan, Hilde F. Johnson, in his Christmas message to the people of South Sudan also warned against ethnic killings

“I call on all South Sudanese to now help calm the situation down, to refrain from any inciting language or hate speech. I call on the leaders of this new country and all political factions and parties, as well as community leaders, to refrain from any action that fuels ethnic tensions and exacerbates violence”. Hilde appealed in the Christmas message that it’s a trying time for the people of Southern Sudan.

Fighting has spread across Southern Sudan.
