Ramy AshourWe have a few days to go in December 2013 and then it is a new year 2014. A new day, new week, new month or New Year brings new challenges or ideas. Personally, I will like to experience the atmosphere of an international cricket or rugby match. I will also like to understand or learn American football and become the Number 1 in squash.

I have been fortunate in 2013 to pick up squash and have been meeting up with a work colleague every week for a match. It has been wonderful but tough challenge to keep fit for the matches. Initially, I lost heavily to my work colleague but gradually improved on the basics and shot selections. I must admit it helps that already proficient at other racket sports such as lawn tennis and badminton.

The next level is to win more games than my opponent and also work on my fitness level. It is important to be fit and this allows you to go for the right shot. Hopefully, I can dream of becoming the Number 1 squash player. It would help if I was born, lived or raised in Egypt, maybe would have a chance of realising my dream.
Squash is one of the top 5 sports in Egypt alongside football, Basketball, handball and tennis.

Currently, Egypt is the country that has more top players in all forms of the sports. The best men’s player in squash is the Egyptian Ramy Ashour. He has been dominating the rankings since 2012 and went 49 matches undefeated until November 2013. He has 3 fellow compatriots in the top 10 rankings. They include Mohamed Elshorbagy ranked 4th, Karim Darwish ranked 6th and Amr Shabana ranked 9th in the world rankings as December 2013.

Raneem El Weleily
In the women’s ranking Nicol David from Malaysia tops the table. However, Raneem El Welily is ranked 3rd (left player  in the picture with Nicol David) and Omneya Andel Kawy is ranked 13th in the world.

In the junior ranking published in August 2013, only Egypt has two entries in the top 10 in both men and women.Karim El Hammamy is the No 1 male junior player and Fares Mohamed Dessouki in 4th position. While, Nour El Sherbini occupies the 5th position and Mariam Ibrahim Metwally is in 9th position in the women’s junior rankings.

I have mentioned that it is my dream to become the number 1 ranked squash player. However, it would have to wait as Ramy Ashour is a quality player that is on top of his game. I have seen a few clips of his matches on internet and he has all attributes of a top athlete. I can compare him to having the flexibility of Novak Djokvic, the subtile touches of Roger Federer and mental strength of Raphel Nadal.

He has won the world championship title twice in 2008 and 2012. This year 2013 missed out on the title due to injury in the semi final match. It was a set all against the eventually winner Nick Matthew. He was on a 49 winning streak prior to the semi final match against Nick Matthew and favourite to win the match. In 2012, he reached the final of every tour event competed in. He won five of the events including the world championship.

The latest PSA World Tour rankings show Ramy’s dominancy and consistency in the PSA World Tour. In August 2013 PSA COO Lee Beachill said in an interview that the player is a fantastic role model for the sport and thinks he is incredible particularly given the very standard and depth on the Tour.
His dormancy is a highlight for me in 2013 world sports and would be hoping that he continues to dazzle fans in many years to come. I also would like to see the sports to make the cut in Olympics sports. This would enhance his image outside of the Squash environment. I would have recommended fans lucky enough to watch the 2014 Commonwealth games in Scotland but he would not be participating as Egypt is not one of the African countries going to the event.

However, there are numerous tour events scheduled for next year or you can decide to watch on TV.I can assure you that it is one of those sports that is very entertaining to play or watch. There are close, explosive and entertaining rallies in each point.
Personally, I have been hooked on it and will continue to play it next year by God’s grace. It would help in my overall fitness and cardio.

I encourage readers to try the sports as a new year resolution and tell me of their experiences. In the meantime, I will update you in future of my attempt at becoming the Number 1 Squash player at my work place.
