By Joseph Elunya Brig Henry Tumukunde has been promoted to Lt Gen and retired from the army. Tumukunde a former spy chief has been on‘katebe’ (un-deployed) since 2005 when he was arrested for allegedly spreading harmful propaganda and military misconduct. He battled the charges at the General court martial until 18 April 2013 when the charge of spreading harmful propaganda was dropped. The joint charge of military misconduct was however upheld leading to him being sentenced to a severe reprimand. Former Uganda’s Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi has picked nomination papers to challenge President Yoweri Museveni in the 2016 national elections. Amama Mbabazi who was accompanied by his wife Jacqueline picked the forms on Monday morning from the offices of the National Electoral Commission. Amama who has previously made known his presidential through the social media posted this shortly on his facebook page. “This morning, my wife Jacqueline and I fulfilled the first step towards nominations as Presidential Candidate in the Presidential elections for 2016, by picking up nomination forms in person”. Mbabazi who was sacked last year by his boss President Museveni for allegedly nursing presidential ambitions says he will contest in the 2016 elections on the ruling NRM party ticket. President Yoweri Museveni has called on all Ugandans to embrace the National Population and Housing Census exercise that is slated to commence on 28th August to 6th September 2014. The President was addressing the nation this morning at State House, Nakasero over the forthcoming Census exercise. Kampala-Uganda has scoffed at the US Government over sanctions. The United States Government this week slapped sanctions on Uganda over its anti-gay legislation. The sanctions include travel ban for corrupt Ugandan government officials and suspension of joint military exercises. The infighting within Uganda’s ruling party the National Resistance Movement has escalated. The latest fighting has pitted President Museveni against his childhood friend Amama Mbabzi, the powerful Prime Minister. Museveni recently accused Premier Mbabazi of mobilizing to replace him as head of the National Resistance Movement party. Kampala-President Yoweri Museveni says he deployed the Uganda People’s Defense Forces-UPDF in South Sudan to avoid it from collapsing. Kampala-Several Ugandan soldiers are reported to have been killed by South Sudanese rebels. The soldiers are reported to have been killed early this week when they fell into an ambush in a place called Jemeza, 90 kilometers from Juba. The exact number of the dead is not known, but sources from Bombo Military Barracks, in Uganda say several bodies, have been brought in from South Sudan. The army is however tightlipped, on the exact number killed, and the identity of the victims. Kampala-President Yoweri Museveni has held talks with Mrs. Rebecca Garang, the wife of the late Sudanese People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) leader Gen John Garang on the ongoing crisis. The two met on Thursday morning at President Yoweri Museveni’s country home in Rwakitura, South Western Uganda.
