Two AMISOM Soldiers Killed & Several Civilians Reported Dead in Somali Parliament Attack




Alshabaab militias have attacked Somali parliament killing two soldiers from African Union Mission in Somalia-AMISOM and several civilians.

A Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Device (VBIED) went off at the entrance to the Somali Parliament and shortly al Shabaab fighters also stormed the building.

Major Deo Akiiki The Spokesperson of the Ugandan military contingent in Somalia confirmed the attack.

“A suicide VBIED at Parliament, 3 of the attackers killed and 02 blew themselves up, two AMISOM deaths, civillian fatalities as well” Akiiki stated.

The Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission for Somalia (SRCC), Ambassador Mahamat Saleh Annadif also confirmed the attack and commended Somali security forces and AMISOM personnel for their quick response to  the attack.

“The quick response team of the Somali National Army, supported by AMISOM security personnel, immediately deployed to the area and countered the attack. All Members of Parliament have safely been evacuated from the building. Medical teams are on the scene to provide immediate attention and the injured have been brought to the AMISOM hospital where they are receiving medical attention”. Annadif’s statement reads in part.

The Ambassador Annadif condemned the attack “these attacks show that al Shabaab simply don’t care about the plight of innocent Somalis. Yet again they are bent on their own selfish purpose and show no respect for the well-being of ordinary people. And the failure of their attack once again evidences the futility of their actions.”

Alshabab militias have carried out suicide attacks despite having been forced out of Mogadishu by the African Union troops.
