Fuel tanker accident

Kampala-at least 31 people are now known to have died and 29 severely injured following a Saturday night fire accident in the outskirts of Kampala.

The accident that happened along the Northern Bypass at 10pm East African time involved a fuel tanker registration number KB L 361B and a Toyota UAS 374C.

The police suspect the fire started when one of the boda-boda cyclists who had siphoned fuel tried to ignite the engine of his motorcycle to escape from the scene.

“We suspect the fire was started by a boda-boda cyclist who was among those siphoning fuel from the tanker and as he ignited the engine of his motorcycle the fire bust out because of flammable vapour that had accumulated in the place” Felix Kaweesi the Kampala Metropolitan Police Commander told the media on Sunday morning.

Kaweesi says police arrived 29 minutes later and managed to contain the fire.

Some of the dead include Sylvia Nankajjo, Alex Muluya and John Ntale.

Bodies Burnt Beyond recognition

Dr Moses Byaruhanga, the Medical Director of Uganda Police Force says that the government has setup a team of forty experts to help in identifying the bodies.

The experts comprise of pathologists, scene of crime and mortuary attendants

“Dear Ugandans, I have learnt with great shock of the tragedy in which vehicles have been burnt by a fuel tanker at Namungona causing loss of lives. Am closely monitoring efforts of the Police and health workers at the scene.” – the President stated in a statement issued by Statehouse

Relatives of the victims are gathered at the national referral hospital in Mulago to try and identify the victims.
